What makes us enjoy spaces
Sunday Living is created by Marieke Vaandrager. Marieke has been living in the Mediterranean for nearly 25 years, spending more than 16 years in the countryside. There, she built houses from local stone, in places surrounded by olive trees. It’s no surprise that she grew to love natural colours and materials – they bring calm and warmth, and their imperfections add character. These three elements are always reflected in her work.

Living the Sunday
We believe your home should feel like a Sunday morning – every day. Some nice music and a good cup of coffee in hand, comfy on your sofa, and that quiet sense of happiness as you look around and simply enjoy your home. That’s the feeling we want to bring into every space we create.
We live
where the sun shines
Málaga – As Dutch parents of our newborn daughter Mees, just two months old at the time Marieke and Alphons set off for Spain without a fixed plan. They ended up living in Ronda for 16 years, where they began building: first their own home, and later several rental apartments. Marieke: “We now live in Málaga, where we feel more inspired and have started developing, building and designing for clients as well. We truly enjoy the international atmosphere, the climate, the city life and the warm, social community around us.”

Create – Marieke: “After leaving my job as a marketing manager in the Netherlands, we spent a year travelling through Spain. Once we settled in Ronda, I moved into a more creative direction. From designing brand identities and websites to making wooden furniture, baby clothing and photo reports – the common thread was creating things where balance plays a decisive role. And that hasn’t changed. In everything I do, I strive for balance: in interiors, in the way I work with clients, and in my own work–life harmony.”

How we work
At Sunday Living, our approach is rooted in style and intuition. We believe that every home begins with understanding the people who live in it. That’s why we start by getting to know you – your rhythm of life in Spain, the moments you cherish, and the kind of atmosphere you want to create.
The first meeting is without any obligation. If we both feel there’s a good connection, we’ll schedule a second meeting to discuss the details. From there, we’ll prepare a proposal and a timeline tailored to your project.

Our services are as diverse as the homes we create, from assisting in the search for your perfect property, to guiding you through the building process, to selecting the right cushions and paint colors.
Marieke has lived and worked in Spain since 2003 and knows that things here often move a little differently than in countries like the Netherlands. She brings an open, hands-on approach and is happy to support wherever help is needed.

Every home she designs has its own character – one might be bold and colorful, another more grounded and calm – yet all share that same sense of ease.
For Marieke, the layout of a home defines its soul, while colors and furnishings shape its atmosphere. She has a keen eye for both structure and detail – knowing exactly where an opening should be, which door can go, and where the candleholder or artwork will feel perfectly at home.

Regions
Málaga City
Malaga has tremendously changed for the better over the last 2 decades. There are many trendy areas, beautiful parks, hundreds of restaurants and beautiful streets and buildings to admire and explore.
Thanks to the efforts of the Malaga city council, it continues to develop positively, not only for tourists but especially for all residents. The many museums, the clean beaches, the impressive harbor, the authentic bars, the atmospheric squares and, of course, the history of Picasso give this city the shine it deserves. At present we have many projects with our name tag attached to it. Ask us for more information on interesting neighborhoods and investment opportunities.
Costa del Sol
Marbella, Estepona, Nerja. Places you have probably heard about. Known to international tourists, but thanks to their beautiful city centers, wonderful beaches, restaurants and rich nature, also extremely popular with people who live there permanently.
The high-rise buildings from the past have given way to building attractive urbanizations with lots of green areas, swimming pools, golf courses and country houses. In Malaga, living close to the beach is still affordable and we know the places you want to check out.
White Villages
The famous and authentic “pueblos blancos”, the white villages in Andalusia reveil many Moorish influences, are packed with bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the best local products like hams, cheeses and wines. One of our favorites is Ronda where we recently built some unique apartments (2020) and a family home (2012). The family home allowed us to use a mixture of modern architecture in combination with local materials.

Marieke Vaandrager
House layouts & interior design
Marieke has a degree in business communications at the Hogeschool Holland in Amsterdam and held various positions in advertising and marketing. In 2003 she moved to Spain, wrote columns, and founded her own design agency. In addition, she and her husband invested in various projects in the authentic Ronda and Olvera. In Málaga, she and good friend Saskia Gruijters have developed both own projects as complete renovations for clients. Together they have extensive experience and still enjoy collaborating on projects whenever possible.
Marieke has a passion for design, architecture, photography, pottery and styling.
Marieke is straightforward, knows many people, and always keeps a promise.

The initial appointment is always free of charge. It serves as an introduction and an opportunity to discuss the situation and clarify your needs. In turn, I can explain my working process and the areas in which I can assist. I usually schedule about 30 minutes for this meeting.

Our Spanish home had a classic but somewhat outdated feel, and we longed for a lighter, warmer and more balanced atmosphere. Marieke created exactly that.
